What Is Threshing Day About?
Threshing Day takes readers back to Basgiath War College, where aspiring dragon riders face one of the most dangerous moments of their lives. During the Threshing, cadets encounter dragons and attempt to establish a bond that can determine their future.
The challenge is unforgiving. A dragon may choose a cadet, reject them, or prove deadly to anyone who approaches without earning its respect. Competition between cadets adds another layer of danger, as ambition, loyalty, rivalry, and survival collide.
Rather than being another main-series novel following a single central storyline, Threshing Day presents thirteen stories connected to familiar characters and their dragons. These accounts provide additional perspectives on the event and expand the world of the Empyrean series.
The book explores the choices and experiences that shape individual riders. It also offers fans an opportunity to revisit important characters and discover more about their relationships with their dragons.

Is Threshing Day the Fourth Empyrean Book?
Threshing Day is a companion book in the Empyrean universe, rather than the fourth main instalment in the central series.
Its stories expand on an important event and provide additional character perspectives. Readers looking for the next main-series novel should distinguish this companion collection from a numbered sequel.
The book can introduce readers to the world, but its stories contain information that may be more meaningful after reading the earlier books.
Threshing Day Reading Order
For the most complete experience, follow this reading order:
- Fourth Wing — the first book in the Empyrean series.
- Iron Flame — the second book.
- Onyx Storm — the third book.
- Threshing Day — the companion collection of thirteen stories.
Reading the main novels first helps readers understand the characters, their relationships, the political tensions, and the significance of the events explored in Threshing Day.
